11. (JEE Main 2021 (Online) 17th March Evening Shift)

A sound wave of frequency 245 Hz travels with the speed of 300 ms 1 along the positive x-axis. Each point of the wave moves to and from through a total distance of 6 cm. What will be the mathematical expression of this travelling wave?

A. Y(x, t) = 0.03 [ sin 5.1x (0.2 × 103)t ]

B. Y(x, t) = 0.03 [ sin 5.1x (1.5 × 103)t ]

C. Y(x, t) = 0.06 [ sin 5.1x (1.5 × 103)t ]

D. Y(x, t) = 0.06 [ sin 0.8x (0.5 × 103)t ]

Correct Answer is Option (B)

Y = A sin ( k x ω t )

A = 6 2 = 3cm = 0.03 m

ω = 2 π f = 2 π × 245

ω = 1.5 × 10 3

k = ω v = 1.5 × 10 3 300

k = 5.1

y = 0.03 sin ( 5.1 x ( 1.5 × 10 3 ) t )

12. (JEE Main 2021 (Online) 24th February Evening ShiftWhich of the following equations represents a travelling wave?)

Which of the following equations represents a travelling wave?

A. y = Aexcos( ω t θ )

B. y = Ae x2(vt + θ )

C. y = A sin (15x 2t)

D. y = A sinx cos ω t

Correct Answer is Option (C)

Y = F(x, t)

For travelling wave y should be linear function of x and t and they must exist as (x ± vt)

Y = A sin (15x 2t) linear function in x and t.

13. (JEE Main 2021 (Online) 20th July Morning Shift)

The amplitude of wave disturbance propagating in the positive x-direction is given by y = 1 ( 1 + x ) 2 at time t = 0 and y = 1 1 + ( x 2 ) 2 at t = 1 s, where x and y are in metres. The shape of wave does not change during the propagation. The velocity of the wave will be ___________ m/s.

Correct Answer is 2

As per question,

at t = 0, y = 1 ( 1 + x ) 2

and at t = 1 s, y = 1 1 + ( x 2 ) 2 .... (i)

As we know,

At t = t s, y = 1 1 + ( x v t ) 2

So, at t = 1 s, y = 1 1 + ( x v ) 2 .... (ii)

On comparing Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

v = 2 ms 1

Hence, the velocity of the wave will be 2 m/s.

14. (JEE Main 2020 (Online) 4th September Morning Slot)

For a transverse wave travelling along a straight line, the distance between two peaks (crests) is 5 m, while the distance between one crest and one trough is 1.5 m. The possible wavelengths (in m) of the are :

A. 1, 3, 5, .....

B. 1 1 , 1 3 , 1 5 , .....

C. 1, 2, 3, .....

D. 1 2 , 1 4 , 1 6 , .....

Correct Answer is Option (B)

1.5 = ( 2 n 1 + 1 ) λ 2 ......(1)

5 = n2 λ .....(2)

(1) ÷ (2)

1.5 5 = ( 2 n 1 + 1 ) 2 n 2

3n2 = 10n1 + 5

n1 = 1 ; n2 = 5 λ = 1

n1 = 4 ; n2 = 15 λ = 1/3

n1 = 7 ; n2 = 25 λ = 1/5
