A Carnot engine has the same efficiency between (i) 100   K and 600   K and (ii) T K and 960   K . The temperature T in kelvin of the sink is

Correct Option is (B)

Efficiency of a carnot engine is η = 1 T C T H

For case (i),

T C = 100   K and T H = 600   K

η 1 = 1 100 600 = 5 6

For case (ii),

T C = T K  and  T H = 960   K

η 2 = 1 T 960

Given η 1 = η 2

5 6 = 1 T 960 5 6 = 960 T 960

Solving for T , we get T = 160   K

A Carnot engine with efficiency 50 % takes heat from a source at 600   K . To increase the efficiency to 70 % , keeping the temperature of the sink same, the new temperature of the source will be

A. 360   K

B. 1000   K

Correct Option is (B)

T H = 600 k η = 1 T C T H  but,  η = 1 2 . . . . ( Given : η = 50 % ) 1 2 = 1 T C 600 T C = 300 K

With T C = 300   K , the efficiency is increased to 70 %

New temperature of the source will be T H new 

η = 1 300   T H new  300   T H new  = 1 7 10 . ( η = 70 % ) T H new  = 3000 3 = 1000   K
