Considering the initial position of ship A as origin, so the velocity and position of ship will be

v A = ( 30 i ^ + 50 j ^ ) and r A = ( 0 i ^ + 0 j ^ )

Now, as given in the question, velocity and position of ship B will be, v B = 10 i ^ and r B = ( 80 i ^ + 150 j ^ )

Time after which the distance is minimum between A and B can be calculated as

t = | r B A . v B A | | v B A | 2

where, r B A = r B r A = 80 i ^ + 150 j ^

and v B A = 10 i ^ ( 30 i ^ + 50 j ^ )

= 40 i ^ 50 j ^

t = | ( 80 i ^ + 150 j ^ ) . ( 40 i ^ 50 j ^ ) | | 40 i ^ 50 j ^ | 2
