1. ⇒  (MHT CET 2023 11th May Morning Shift )

Let ω 1 be a cube root of unity and S be the set of all non-singular matrices of the form [ 1 a b ω 1 c ω 2 ω 1 ] where each of a , b and c is either ω or ω 2 , then the number of distinct matrices in the set S is

A. 2

B. 6

C. 4

D. 8

Correct answer option is (A)

Let A = [ 1 a b ω 1 c ω 2 ω 1 ]

For non-singular matrix | A | 0

| 1 a b ω 1 c ω 2 ω 1 | 0

1 ( 1 ω c ) a ( ω ω 2 c ) + b ( 0 ) 0 1 ( 1 ω c ) a ω ( 1 ω c ) 0 ( 1 ω c ) ( 1 a ω ) 0 c 1 ω  and  a 1 ω c ω 2  and  a ω 2 [ ω 3 = 1 ]

So possible value of a and c is ω only and b can take values ω or ω 2 .

The possible number of distinct matrices = 2.

2. ⇒  (MHT CET 2021 20th September Morning Shift )

If inverse of [ 1 2 x 4 1 7 2 4 6 ] does not exist, then x =

A. -3

B. 2

C. 3

D. 0

Correct answer option is (A)

 Here  | 1 2 x 4 1 7 2 4 6 | = 0 ( 6 28 ) 2 ( 24 14 ) + x ( 16 + 2 ) = 0 22 + 76 + 18 x = 0 x = 3
