A ladder 5 meters long rests against a vertical wall. If its top slides downwards at the rate of 10   cm / s , then the angle between the ladder and the floor is decreasing at the rate of ________ rad./s when it's lower end is 4   m away from the wall.

A. 0.1

B. 0.025

C. 0.1

D. 0.025

Correct Option is (D)

MHT CET 2023 12th May Morning Shift Mathematics - Application of Derivatives Question 1 English Explanation

According to the figure, x 2 + y 2 = 25 ..... (i)

Note that cos θ = OB AB = x 5

x = 5 cos θ  (i)  25 cos 2 θ + y 2 = 25

Differentiating w.r.t. 't', we get

50 cos θ sin θ d θ dt + 2 y d y dt = 0 25 sin θ cos θ d θ dt = y d y dt 25 sin θ cos θ d θ dt = y ( 0.1 ) [ d y   d x = 10   cm / s = 0.1   m / s ] 25 sin θ cos θ d θ dt = ( 0.1 ) y  (ii)   at  x = 4 , cos θ = 4 5 , sin θ = 3 5  and  y = 3  (ii)  25 × 3 5 × 4 5 × d θ dt = 0.3 d θ dt = 0.025

i.e., the angle is decreasing at the rate of 0.025   rad / s

17. ⇒  (MHT CET 2023 11th May Evening Shift )

A rod A B , 13 feet long moves with its ends A and B on two perpendicular lines O X and O Y respectively. When A is 5 feet from O , it is moving away at the rate of 3 feet / sec . At this instant, B is moving at the rate

A. 5 4 ft / sec upwards.

B. 4 5 ft / sec upwards.

C. 5 4 ft / sec downwards.

D. 4 5 ft / sec downwards.

Correct Option is (C)

MHT CET 2023 11th May Evening Shift Mathematics - Application of Derivatives Question 12 English Explanation

Note that OAB is a right angled triangle.

Let OA = x ft and OB = y ft .

y 2 = 169 x 2

Now, differentiating above function w.r.t. time ' t ', we get

2 y d y dt = 2 x d x dt ..... (i)

At x = 5 , d x dt = 3 ft / sec ..... [Given]

Also, at x = 5 , y = 12

(i) 2 ( 12 ) d y dt = 2 ( 5 ) ( 3 )

d y   d x = 5 4

Negative sign indicates that B is moving downwards.

B is moving at the rate 5 4 ft / sec downwards.
